Cromarty Image Library

More About This Site

The Cromarty Image Library was created in 2003 by Plexus Media, a web development company based in the town. We thought it would be interesting to collect photos showing how the streets and buildings of the town have changed over the years. However, we had no idea then how well the site would take off, or the things it would be used for.

On the 27th of February that year, the Inverness bus caught fire at the foot of the Denny. No-one was hurt, I hasten to add, but for many youngsters in the town seeing pictures and being able to comment on them online caught their imagination, making the website one of their talking points for some time. This was before Bebo and Facebook remember.

Soon their parents got in on the act, raking photos out of biscuit tins in their attics and bringing them round to us for scanning. To our surprise we found that these were rarely photos of buildings as we'd first intended, but were of people, families and events. The site's popularity exploded as users worked together to put long-forgotten names to faces, often finding pictures of themselves on the site from years before which they'd never seen.

The next development came when expat Croms started scanning and emailing photos to us, getting back in touch with friends they'd lost contact with decades before. Descendants of those who'd left Cromarty over a hundred years ago sent us copies of some of their family photos, and in return they received help from locals in contacting far-flung relations.

We've had a lot of fun with the site, organising photography competitions for instance. When the Queen Mary 2 cruise liner first visited the firth in 2005, Cromarty was swamped with visitors and our competition brought in hundreds of entries.

Over the years since we've improved and added to the system which runs the site, adding larger versions of some images, audio and video clips, downloadable documents and zoomable pictures. We've created facilities to categorise photos by year, album or group, and to view all pictures by a particular contributor. Visitors to the site can create their own albums, and if they wish, can make them public for everyone to see.

Following the success of this site a number of other Image Libraries have been created using the same system and we list them at the foot of this page. If you would like a site like this for your town or community, please click here.
