One of the types of seaplane which would have been seen around Cromarty in the 1910s.

This aircraft was the largest of the 3 seaplane types operating from the Cromarty Firth, launching down a ramp off the Links, just below the lighthouse. The Cromarty Naval Air Station, was the first on the Scottish coast, and the CO was Commander A. M. Longmore RN., of the Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps. The engine Mechanics included 3 Frenchmen, leased from the Renault Company. This is the same aircraft shown up on the ramp, in the picture #240. This 'on the water' photo was supplied by the French Museum of Air & Space, Le Bourget, Paris, by mon ami Docteur Phillippe Gras, Ministere de la Defense, Centre de Documentation. One of the Mechs. can be seen checking for leaks in the floats while underway on test, 'cos normally the aircraft had only 2 crew. C'est tous the 'noo'! I was interested to see the comments that you have all been adding as I am working on a project to locate, identify and photographically record 20th Century Military structures. This can be anything from Hangars to pillboxes and include remains of aircraft crashes. If any of you know of precise locations where there are remains I would be interested to hear as many of these sites now seem to be disppearing at an alarming rate despite having survived for all this time. I am also working on getting some form of sponsorship which will enable all of these photos to be visible to all on a website. So far I have taken in excess of 3000 photos.
