Clumsy's Grave

Clumsy was a very well known dog in a town full of them! picture #56 and picture #1684 show him in his prime. This memorial stone in the Royal Hotel garden says:-

CLUMSY
DIED 4th OCTOBER 1999
16 YEARS OLD, PLUS.

A DOG
LOVED BY
ALL OF CROMARTY

A new block of flats are planned for the area where the Royal function room stands. The Community council is considering what to call the block. Should it be named after Admiral Napier, the original name of the Royal, or after Clumsy, the dog who lived there and was so well known in the town? Admiral Napier House has a powerful ring to it, with a fine piece of history attached. A plaque similar to the 'Thompson' one on Sackville Campbell's House or better, in keeping with the flats colour & design, placed in a communal foyer,

After Clumsy's death and well attended funeral service, he was buried in the hotel garden. Wilf Taylor and I, both on the Community Council at the time, decided that a stone would be fitting. I put a bottle in the Royal's pub as a collection plate for donations but the amount collected was far short of the stone's cost. Wilf and I put in the rest and the stone was purchased.

The owner of the hotel, with plans to build the present flats, wouldn't allow us to place the stone over Clumsy's resting place. The stone lay in the lobby of the Function Room until 2005 when it was placed in its present spot. Comment left on 12 August 2012 at 18:04 by Alex Davidson
