Alison Dunn, Potter 1925-2006

Date Added: 27 June 2006 Contributor: Colin Dunn Year: 1965 Picture No: 1687

This is a photo of my mother Alison Dunn, decorating a piece of pottery. When we first moved to Cromarty from Aultbea in 1965, Alison operated her pottery from our temporary home in one of the old camp building at the top of the South Sutor whilst looking for a suitable house in Cromarty. This picture was taken by a magazine photographer who kindly left us with a copy. Alison carried on operating the pottery in cottages behind Seabank House, which we moved into in 1966. She retired from full time pottery in early 90s.

Sadly, Alison passed away on 18th June after suffering a stroke.

Very sorry indeed to hear of Alison's death. She was a true individual and a great friend to me when I moved to Cromarty in 1989. She used to make fantastic colourful stripy shawls for the Cromarty babies - I still have the three she made for my children. Who else still has theirs? I too was very sorry to hear that Alison had passed away. She was a great friend to my Mum. I also have a colourful blanket that she knitted for my son, Finlay. Comment left on 28 June 2006 at 19:29 by Jess Alexander (nee Gunn)
Myself and my family were also very sorry to hear of Alison's passing. She was a very dear person with a lovely family. She was very kind to my sister Cynthia when she worked in the pottery tea shop, and my wife Angie held her in great esteem also. Our condolences to you all. My deepest sympathies on the occasion of Alison's passing. Staying with Alison and her family at Seabank House for short times during the summer of 1974 and 1975 belongs to my most cherished memories. Knowing Alison was like having a Mom in Scotland; she was uplifting and inspiring. I still have a most beautiful piece of pottery created by her. May God bless her and comfort her soul in the next world. Love to you all. Comment left on 07 July 2006 at 10:54 by Hans J. Thimm
Only know of Alison Dunn, Potter, through Watson relations. I have several of her pottery pieces which I love. So sorry to hear that she had passed away recently.

We have been given two lovely pieces which appear to be signed on their bases by Alison Dunn. It was fantastic to find her details on the net but sad to hear of her death. The pieces are decorated in a 1960's style brush stroke, hand signed, with Cromarty added. We wondered if this could be the same artist? Comment left on 27 October 2006 at 10:25 by Carol Cullen
Hi Carol. It's almost certain that your dishes were decorated by my mother in the late 1960s, shortly after we first arrived in Cromarty (1965). Pieces from that period, and the early 70s, have recently started appearing on Ebay, and I've heard that you can buy them at the 'Barras' in Glasgow too.
