Mrs Newell came to Newhall school when I was there sometime between 1949 and 55. I can't remember the circumstances but I remember Mrs Newell. God bless her, long long may she reign. Comment left on 05 August 2008 at 20:05 by Mary Mackay now Tomlinson Harrison
Mrs Newall taught me in Cromarty Primary School. I met her a few years ago at Tulloch Castle when she was at the Fourways Club Christmas Dinner and I was at a Barmac Christmas dance. She looked marvelous and it was lovely to see her again. Best wishes for your 100th. Comment left on 06 August 2008 at 22:52 by Rhoda Patience (nee MacLeod)
Please pass on my best wishes to Mrs Newell on reaching her 100th birthday. Comment left on 06 August 2008 at 23:22 by Hazel Pendle (nee Maclean)
Mrs Newell told us many details about Rosenberg when she was a small child, coming up from Duke Street to help her father, John Campbell, who worked for Rev and Mrs Scott (nee Bryden)with the animals and the garden. She told us her father planted most of the wonderful spring bulbs that still flourish today. Comment left on 13 August 2008 at 23:05 by Fran Tilbrook
I was lucky to have Mrs Newell as my first teacher at Cromarty 1971-73. She retired just after I went into Primary 3. What a privilege to be taught by this very special lady who gave me the most crucial of gifts: reading and writing. I seem to remember knitting too?? But it was a long time ago. Congratulations and thank you Mrs Newell - you are truly one in a million. Comment left on 14 August 2008 at 09:21 by Audrey MacKenzie
Mrs Newell taught me in 1963 or 1964 I can't remember which year now. I had/have dyslexia and at school things were rather difficult for me. I remember Mrs Newell asking us to write an essay about what we were going to do when we grew up. My father had been a pilot in the RAF and at that time I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I wrote about how I would become a pilot just like my dad and I remember writing a sentence "With the controls in my hands I would feel quite safe." I didn't think anything about this but Mrs Newall singled me out from the rest of the class to indicate that starting a sentence with the word "with" was very different. You can imagine how proud I felt and I would like to think that what I went on to achieve in adult life was as a result of the encouragement of people such as Mrs Newell. Thank you Mrs Newell you made a difference. Comment left on 24 August 2008 by Don Ratcliffe

I was fortunate enough to be part of the group who travelled with Mrs Newell to the BBC Restoration Event. She was an inspiration to us all - the youngsters adored her - her enthusiasm was/is tangible.
Many many happy returns Jean. Have a wonderful Birthday.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make my mother's big day so special. People of Cromarty, you are amazing! My mother had a ball, and loved every minute of her day. She was even last to bed of the ten of us in the house that night! Comment left on 12 September 2008 at 10:40 by Ruth

My name is Scott Heefner and I live in the United States. Mrs. Newell is my great-aunt whom I haven't had the opportunity to visit in person for over 20 years. I am so happy to find a way to express my fondness for this wonderful, yet distant relative and hope that someone in beautiful Cromarty will say Hello and Happy Birthday to her for her American family. My condolences to Ruth Ian and family. it was your mam that sowed the seeds of the love of history in me, and she really drummed in the composition of the English language to our class, and I still haven't forgotten 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyles. A teacher not to be forgotten. Comment left on 28 October 2011 at 19:56 by Sue florence
Mrs Newell of Cromarty... a fitting tribute to a wonderful lady I have known all my life. She embraced all that was good, and as children, taught us about the christian values, and to show respect to others. As a young boy I once called her Jean...I never repeated that mistake. A light has gone out in this famous old town, but the memories of Mrs Newell will remain as long as the town itself. I found out about her passing when I was told by Helen in the Cromarty Arms, and later when Denise was trying to explain to her son Jack about a new star in the sky she simply said "It will be the brightest one" That just has to be perfect. Rest in peace Mrs Newell We are going to miss you, and everybody will send their love to a very special lady who will never be forgotten. Comment left on 28 October 2011 at 22:44 by Alex Grant
