New bridge being put in place
This picture shows the replacement harbour bridge being put into place just before the old bridge central support was removed.

What a majestic mess! If the original Smeaton piers, are 'LISTED' structures, why was this design allowed? If some funding source could be secured, could a quality Civil Engineering contractor be found to reinstate a graceful single mid support bridge (pointing into ebb flow) to avoid silting in the 'basin'?
