These inaccessible 'Forts' and their precariously situated twins on the South Sutor, are in fact the searchlight / lookout positions which formed part of an elaborate boom defence system that protected the Cromarty Firth from 'U' Boat attack, built just before the First World War.

In the fifties it was still possible to reach the southern positions by way of a rapidly disintegrating wooden step and rope bridge walk way. My brother Iain and I were instructed that on no account should we go anywhere near them, as they were very dangerous, but boys being boys we did, we're still here to tell the tale.

Winston Churchill as Lord of The Admiralty instigated the construction of the boom defence and the gun emplacements, gun control and underground magazines on the cliffs above. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Comment left on 22 April 2007 at 11:55 by Ranald Nicolson Matheson
