Jean says "This is my late uncle, PC45 William Macdonald who was born in The Mains, Cromarty in Sept/Oct 1894. He joined the Police force when he was 18 years and 6 months old, served in Dingwall, Stornoway and Invergordon, then in 1915 the Chief Constable give his approval for him to enlist in the Army for the duration of the war. In May 1917 he was sadly killed in action during the Arras Offensive. His name appears on the Cromarty War Memorial."
