The Scottish Potters Association held a recent event at the old stable on the Sutor, organised by Barbel Dister of Cromarty Pottery. An experimental basket kiln, modelled on those often used by primitive cultures throughout history, was built and fired. A 'bottle' shape was first constructed with woven willow, then covered with clay. As the preparatory fire burned, the basket structure burned away and the clay form hardened. Eventually the temperature inside reached over 1100 degrees C. See also picture #2018
