According to Gladys's bio, she was born in Hull in 1939.

October hols was tattie picking time, we loved going to Navity - the crack was great between Alastair Shepherd, Earnie Eastwood, Geordie Morrison and the older tatties pickers. The mornings were cold (7a.m.) sitting on the back of an open trailer, but there was always laughter - we were poor but happy. One morning Freda and I were sitting at the rear of the trailer, legs dangling over the edge and laughing our heads off about something or other. Suddenly the gears changed as the tractor crept up the Denny and to everyones horror threw poor Freda on to the road. It was one of the most scarey moments of our young lives and especially for Freda. No risk assesments carried out in those days, or H&S Regs.
