Date Added: 09 April 2009 Contributor: Carolyn Sheehan Year: 1930 Picture No: 2335

Carolyn says "This is a photo of my Great Grandmother Christina McTavish born to John McTavish and Ann McKenzie in 1853 in Cromarty. Christina married John Urquhart (picture #2336) and they emigrated to New Zealand where Christina died in 1938. Does anyone have any information on this branch of the McTavish family tree?"

John Urquhart was my mother's uncle, and my mother remembers one of John's sons visiting her family in Duke St during WW1. However, he spent most of his time with the MacTavish family, who were living at Cromarty Mains. The children of the Mactavish family included Ann (later Slader), Chrissie (Clements), Bessie (Henderson) and Hugh. There were other siblings too, but these four are all buried in Cromarty cemetery. Iain and I found all four graves during a recent visit, though Ann's and Chrissie's were completely obscured by ivy (now removed!). It was only thanks to Sue Florence's excellent memory that we found Ann's stone. There's a lot of ivy-bashing needed up there!

Ann spent many years as a lady's maid in London, then she returned to Cromarty, lived in Forsyth House and ran it as a boarding-house.

Christina's oldest sister Catherine was the mother of Alexander Bonny who also emigrated to New Zealand but a generation later, in 1909. At least two of his daughters (Annie and Jean Christina) showed a remarkable likeness to Christina at a similar age. Many thanks from my Mum for the picture - Catherine was her Great Grandmother. We believe Christina got her name from her paternal grandmother. Comment left on 13 August 2009 at 13:47 by Philip

I have more information on John McTavish. He is also listed as my Grandfather, Sam McTavish's army record as next of kin, so Roderick and Sam were brothers. John McTavish was their father and may well have been an emigrant to New Zealand, definitely the son of an emigrant. His Grandson, my cousin, is John McTavish who lives in Tauranga NZ and is Married to Mary McTavish (also a cousin). Comment left on 09 January 2012 at 20:55 by Gordon McTavish
