I may be mistaken but did Betty Hogg not cross to Nigg in the 50s? Anyone else remember? I know she swam about a lot in the summer. Comment left on 13 August 2009 at 16:29 by DSM
Yes, I think you are correct, and did Hughie Robertson not do it as well? Comment left on 13 August 2009 at 18:11 by Dorothy Ewen (Robertson)
I believe Betty did swim to Nigg. It's probably mentioned in the book of interviews of local Croms, a few years ago. I have it on my bookshelf - somewhere..... Comment left on 13 August 2009 at 22:41 by Margaret Tong
My Dad Bertie Whiteman was always talking about a lady Betty Toot who alledgedly swam the firth lots?. I dont know what her "real" name was/is Can anyone help? Comment left on 13 August 2009 at 23:29 by Alan Whiteman
Yes this is correct. She was accompanied by Andrew Skinner "Rex" and either Albert or Johnnie in the escort boat Enterprise. This was on a Sunday evening after the east wind had dropped. As you say both Betty and also Andrew were very strong swimmers. Comment left on 14 August 2009 at 00:50 by Alex Grant
I remember sitting on the wall at Shore Street with Elaine when we were kids and Betty telling us about swimming to Nigg. I think my brother Rory did it when he was younger too. Comment left on 14 August 2009 at 17:57 by Jess Alexander
Betty was also awarded a parchment for saving men whose boat got into trouble. Comment left on 15 August 2009 at 00:18 by Margaret Tong
