Little Vennel

Little Vennel

Date Added: 01 January 2003 Contributor: Andrew Bathie Year: 1910 Picture No: 256

This early picture captures some of the fisher folk at work. I would guess that this dates to about 1910. Previously both this and its larger neighbour were called Fish or Fisher Vennels.

I lived in Little Vennel from approx 1946 - 1960 - in the house opposite one on the right - number 92. The house second up on the right had been demolished by then - long time before I imagine - and only a wall was left.
My grandmother lived in Big Vennel. Number 66.

Thanks for the photo of the Little Vennel.
I was born in The Big Vennel, the next street in 1935. My father was Donald, His elder brother was James, and his sisters name was Margaret. I believe my father worked on a steam thressing mill. He died in 1937.
My grandfather was James, and my Grandmother was called Jessie. They lived at 86 Little Vennel. He was called by the old Cromarty tradition of giving everyone a nickname it was Doctory, im not sure of the spelling. Perhaps some of your elder family members may know of my family history.

Regards,
Donald Hossack.

Little Vennel was where my family lived, my great grandfather Alexander Finlayson, my grandmother Annie and her brothers Bennie and Donald and perhaps another brother, I know my grandmother did loose some of her siblings, does anyone have any information about this family, I know we had some relatives in the Watson and Hogg families. Many thanks. Comment left on 12 January 2008 at 12:30 by Maureen Rippon
My father Donald Hossack was also born here in the big Vennel, not sure of the house number. His fathers name was also Donald and Mother Mary's (nee Hynds) brothers were Roddie Hynds, Jimmy, Jock, Karl, of which only three are still alive. Not sure but somehow I think I am related to the Hogg family Via Martha Hogg 1759-1848. If any other family members know more contact me please.
