Willie Nicolson and Billy Thompson with a massive conger eel

Date Added: 11 September 2010 Contributor: Willie Nicolson Year: 1975 Picture No: 2774

This dates from around August 1975 - it's Willie Nicolson and Billy Thompson with a massive conger eel they caught during low tide at the harbour when the boys used to walk along the 'piles' (horizontal support structures) to catch crabs and, if they were lucky (and they were!), lobsters. This particular catch was sold to Skip Mackay (picture #759) for 20p - apparently he knew a recipe for conger stew!

Willie, I too have that photo. Hamish our youngest son is into catching congers too - he has yet to get one bigger than the one in the photo but I must say he has eaten the ones he has caught. YUK. Comment left on 13 September 2010 at 11:38 by Flora Thomson
