Dated at around 1914 and was sent to me an Ancestry UK member. The name "HMS Natal" is very clear to see on his cap, does anyone have any further information about John? At the time of the 1911 Census his wife, Florence Fitzgerald/
Coutts, was living with her parents, William and Mary Ann Coutts, but she was recorded as being married, so where was John?

Hi there, John Fitzgerald was my Great Grandad. You don't see him in the 1911 census because he was then serving on HMS Highflyer in the East Indies (Dec 1910 - Jun 1913 according to his Navy service record). He had a 14 year naval career, 1905 - 1919 starting when he was a boy. His time on the Natal was 07/04/1908 to 09/05/1910. Comment left on 26 December 2011 at 20:31 by James Fitzgerald
