Hossacks

Date Added: 17 May 2011 Contributor: Pamela Brightwell Year: 1860 Picture No: 2945

This is a picture of my Great Grandad and his sons James to the left and Donald, my grandad to the right. Not sure when it was taken, but was taken in Cromarty, I would say around 1860.

I'm not an expert on the history of photography, Pamela, but 1860 seems awfully early for this photo. Photographic film wasn't invented till the 1880s. Before then, professional photographers were using heavy plates which required long exposures with the subject keeping very still. Maybe I'm wrong. Can one of our local camera experts help? I would say not earlier than about 1910 from the clothing. Comment left on 23 May 2011 at 10:00 by Estelle Quick
The photograph could have been taken outside number 86 Little Vennel? Comment left on 23 May 2011 at 14:59 by Bertie Macdonald
Probably 1930's. Comment left on 23 May 2011 at 17:16 by DSM
James Hossack (seated) was born in 1872 and his son Donald was born in 1899 so I'd guess that this picture dates sometime between 1925 and 1935. James was the second cousin to my great grandfather Donald aka Daniel Hossack shown in picture #267. They look quite similar. Comment left on 24 May 2011 at 21:01 by Anonymous
The Donald Hossack pictured is my father. Ive had this picture all my life, and because he died when I was 3 years of age, and I left Cromarty then, I can not remember my father. It is very nice to know I am related to so many Hossacks. I am at present in the Royal Hospital Chelsea (Chelsea Pensioner). I was born in 1935, in the Big Vennel, Cromarty. I would love to hear from any Cromarty, Hossack who might be related to me or not. Also any photos would be appreciated. Comment left on 19 June 2011 at 09:48 by Donald Hossack (Don)
hi there ime wondering if any of the men above are relations to Mary hossack (albeit on the male line as she was born considerably earlier)and married into the Ross family. Comment left on 25 May 2012 at 20:09 by Lynne
Hello there, I have photographs of several Hossacks including Margaret, Hugh (in army uniform )Grace, William (in navy uniform) A wedding party (Mr & Mrs James Hossack, Willie Hossack & Friend) also Margaret Hossack in Inverness. From the album it appears Margaret married a Mr Nisbet in London and they travelled to NZ via Paris, Venice, Pompei & La Linea, Spain. I believe this is the descendants of James Hossack, master cartwright of Chalkhill (1871) and Davidston Farm (1891) Comment left on 03 July 2012 at 12:49 by Mike Cameron
