Mystery Photo

Date Added: 03 August 2012 Contributor: Unknown Year: 1961 Picture No: 3169

In amongst some old books and ledgers in the Townlands Barn / Dairy buildings was this photograph. On the back it says "This Snap was Taken in July 1961".

The building doesn't look like anything in Cromarty - at a guess it might be a photo from a relative in Canada or Australia. Does anyone recognise the gent?

I think this is a man called 'Cookie' who used to come to Cromarty every year and owned the house that John Meiklejohn lives in. I can't remember his proper name or what his connection is with Cromarty. Comment left on 08 August 2012 at 21:59 by Rhona Garratt
I may be completely wrong but that man has a distinct look of Danny Macbean, and I know that Jock Macbean visited relatives in Canada several times. Comment left on 21 September 2012 at 16:37 by Hazel Clark
This could well be Davy McBean who came over from Calgary on a regular basis during the 1950s. He was well known in Cromarty walking round the town wearing his stetson hats and cowboy boots and was known to partake in the odd dram...or two. The hat, glasses, and cigar are all distinctive features of Davy, but as I last saw him about 1956 I'm not totally sure. One thing I am sure about is that Hazel is not "completely wrong" and this is very definitely a McBean. Comment left on 28 September 2012 at 22:08 by Alex Grant
