According to an 1896 obituary, my 4th great-grandfather, David Ross, was born in the same room as Hugh Miller in Cromarty, Scotland. I would venture to guess this is the Miller House :). I was wondering if by chance you might know if anyone at the Miller cottage knew anything about David Ross or if perhaps there was a Ross family that was friends with the Miller family or worked for them. David Ross was born about 1832. We do not have an exact date. Comment left on 23 August 2005 at 02:13 by Dale L. Sheldon
I would like to add to the commentary above. I am descended from the same David Ross who is mentioned in the comment above. I too have the obituary from the Kamlops Sentinel which mentions that he was born in the Hugh Miller cottage. I have been able to prove other items such as "he served in the Crimean War and that he fought in the battle of Sebastopol" were in fact correct. I also have been able to get copies of his seamans papers which list his exact birthdate as July 26, 1824. Given that the other part of his obituary was correct I have to assume the part about being born in Hugh Miller's cottage is also true. Comment left on 19 June 2008 at 20:05 by Patti Calder
