It's wonderful to see the family resemblance. My Grandfather Hugh Finlayson looked so much like his mother Bella Dhu as does my father Archie and I see my brother Hugh looks like Robert's son Andrew. Now I have a maiden name for Robert's wife Margaret. Thanks so much Andie Bathie for all your help in my research of the Finlayson family tree. It is difficult to get the information from Canada. Thanks Nancy, I don't think when we last corresponded we'd made the connection with Bella. My father lived next door to both your Finlayson family on one side and Meg's on the other and has fond memories of both. I trust you've seen the picture of your great grandfather too? This site is great and I thoroughly enjoy the pictures that people have submitted. My husband Dennis, and I were able to get to Cromarty last year with Meg and Hugh Austin, and saw a beautiful place. We also saw where Bella-Dhu and Andrew Finlayson lived. I must give your grandmother, Anne, a call and see how she is doing. Talk to you soon, and good luch with your continued research.

Amazing to see you all on this site! Never knew I could have so many relatives! I am Annie Hawes, Bella Dhu my great granny, Annie Fry - Annie Dhu nee Finlayson my granny, and Shona Fry, now Hawes, my mother. Have a great picture of her in a creel on Pinda's back whch I will upload soon for the record, technology willing. This the only picture I've seen of my lovely Great-uncle Robert and Auntie Meg that we used to go and stay with when I was a kid in Kirkcaldy. Robert had retired from coal mining and my granny Annie was always envious of the free coal he would have for life...... and - this bit to IAN - your great-granny was my Aunt Isabella (great-aunt really) who I loved so much that the second time she came to visit us in London I tried to hide in the boot of her hire-car so she would take me home with her - must have been three or four years old then, and had no idea how far away Canada was! Annie - Nice to hear from you and to see you on this site. My grandfather Hugh Finlayson was your grandmother's brother. I met your mother Janet while in England in 2004 and had a great visit with her and your father Maurice. It was my first visit to England and have only been back once since. I get a real thrill researching my family from Scotland, my paternal from Cromarty, and maternal from the Glasgow area. If you have any pictures you would like to share I would love to see them.

I have fond memories of Aunt Isabella from Toronto as well. The first time was when she and my grandfather came to visit us in North Vancouver when I was young and then I visited her in the early seventies and again in the eighties. She was a very nice lady.

My family origins are unknown to me. My father was born in High Wycombe in England. He moved to Glasgow after military service around 1930 and then moved the whole family to Inverness after the war. That makes me think that there must be some connection with the area. A cousin researched the history and believes that we might be related to a John Finlayson of Kyle of Lochalsh around 1780? My grandfather was Alexander "Alick" Finlayson born in Stornoway Sept. 1886 - Mother's Name "Bella" immigrated to South Australia.

Hi my Dad is Robert Ian Finlayson, Married to Margaret J K Finlayson (nee Kinsey). I love my scottish heritage and when I retire will most certainly reseach this in detail. My grandfather. William Charles Finlayson, left Scotland due to his Fathers death in the second world war. He put his sisters through schooling and moved his mother and sisters to south africa instead of continuing with his educatin. I beleive he had a scholarship to attand Cambridge university. He was unique and very perfectionistic with a number of sensory sensitivities especially sudden noises. He married Edyth Joan Finalyson (Nee Saxon -Young).I beleive his father was involved in the shipping company. Aberdeen and the ships were bombed. I now live in New Zealand with my husband Dayne. Hi i have been trying to find out about my family since my dad, Alexander Finlayson died in 1998. His Mum's name was Annie and my grandad's name was Leslie Finlayson. That's all i know up to now. The Skye Finlaysons were originally from Loch Alsh, the home and origin of our unique and acient clan. There is only about one historical reference to the chief of this small Clan Finlayson. Not related to Finlayson up north. And no Finlaysons are in any way connected to Farquarsons. All this from a long and interesting search.

I have been searching for a few years now for who I believe to be Great Great Grandfather. Murdoch Finlayson b between 1810 and 1820. don't laugh please. He is "supposed" to be my Great Grandfather's father. Charles Finlayson was born in Aberdeenshire to a Murdoch Finlayson and a Margaret Dawson. Margaret and Murdoch did NOT marry but they were together for a little while when Charles was born. After that, I do not know anything. Margaret was born in Drumblade. Seems a wild goose chase for me but am sure my Mum told me that Murdoch was born in R&C. All my Great/Grandparents were well gone by the time I was born. I have a death certificate for my 2 x Great Grandfather Murdoch Finlayson which states that his Mother was Agnes Macrae. His father, Roderick Finlayson. Murdoch born 1815 and died in 1890 at Lochalsh. Can some one please help me if they can as I live in NZ and a long way to come to SCT. I did however, visit in 2009 but had NO idea where Murdoch came from. My hair gets greyer every day trying to find him. Did he own the Kyle Hotel in Lochalsh? I am researching a branch of the Finlayson family of Achmore, in Lochalsh district, county of Ross-Shire circa mid to late 1700s through early 1800s. I am in the USA but born in Nipigon, Ontario. Specifically the family of Kenneth or Kinith Finlayson, born circa 1751 and died in 1825 allegedly at Munlochy. In Alexander MacKenzie's History of Clan Matheson, he sates that "Kenneth Finlayson was a Tacksman of Achmore and after his wife Anne MacKenzie (b. ca 1755, d. 1806 Lochalsh, D/O a Donald MacKenzie) died in 1806 Kenneth moved to Munlochy where he died in 1825. I am specifically researching two of his sons. Nicol Finlayon and his younger brother Duncan Finlayson. Both entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1815 and eventually rose high in the ranks as Chief Factors with a seat on the HBC Governing Council. Nicol is my 4x great grandfather through his half Cree son John Finlayson 1823-1898. I have found original parish baptism records for Nicol and Duncan's older siblings and their three younger siblings, all apparently born while the family was still living at Achmore, yet Nicol and Duncan are missing from the records. Their HBC bio sheets indicate that Nicol was born at Fodderty in 1794 or 1795 and Duncan at Dingwall in 1796 or 1797, with no actual original documents to support those assertions. All the other siblings, both before and after Nicol and Duncan, were baptized at Lochalsh parish with Achmore as their family residence. That's pretty far from Fodderty and Dingwall by horse and buggy. I have lots of additional information including information that Nicol's brothers Alexander and Rev John Finlayson also immigrated to Canada in the 1830s approx. Alexander and his wife Mary Morrison settled in Qubec and Rev John Finlayson settled in a village they named called Lochalsh, in Bruce County Ontario. The HBC bio sheets for Nicol and Duncan indicate incorrectly that their fathe was named John Finlayson and that he settled in Ontario. That is wrong, it was their brother the Rev John Finlayson.
