Years ago I was shown some kind of a guide to Cromarty done by (I think) American oil company people, and one of the pictures on it was of fisherwomen, long skirts tucked up, carrying their husbands on their backs onto their rowboats waiting a few yards out - gather this was (before the advent of the wellington boot!) the only way to keep the menfolks' feet dry for a long cold day's fishing. Did you ever see this picture? Did I just imagine it? Have tried a couple of times to go through the archive for it but there are SO MANY pictures here! This was quite a common practise in Fishing communities across Scotland, and I have seen illustrations and drawings of it, but never a photo as far as I'm aware, and not one of Cromarty.

Hello Annie. I think the photos you saw were copies taken from original glass plates which were from the W J Smith Collection, owned by my father, which I now have, and of which I now own the copyright. Copies of many of the glass plates are now in Cromarty Courthouse Museum and also in the Am Baile Highland Photo archives. Some of the photos were reproduced in a Cromarty Album handout on my father's behalf by Brown and Root, the American company who operated the Nigg Oil Fabrication Yard.
