What year did Cromarty house have servants? Comment left on 15 March 2007 at 16:17 by Amber
I'm sure that, at one time, Cromarty House employed servants for a number of years.
I do remember hearing that my late uncle, Davie McLeman, was 'boots' there. I am guessing that would have in the 1920s or 30s.
If you know my Uncle Dod and Aunt Jean McLeman, do ask them if they have more information.

Was Cromarty House built on the site of Cromarty Castle which I have read about in certain books of the area. Comment left on 16 March 2007 at 21:47 by William Long
The site of Cromarty Castle was - I understand - to the rear and east of the present house. So that would be to the right and to the rear of the house in this photo. Comment left on 17 March 2007 at 16:21 by Calum Davidson
Amber my dad work at Cromarty House in 1937 and he had to keep the drive from the House to the Lodge gates clear of all leaves etc so as not to upset Lady Ross as she passed through in her carriage. He also had to run and open the gates and lift his cap as she passed. Can you imagine how difficult that must have been especially in the autumn? From what I remember being told, but not sure the house did use servants and that is why the tunnel was built so not to be seen leaving or coming to the house. I also remember been told a lot of, if not all the stone on the outer of the house was from the castle.. and somewere to the left of the house there was the old well from the castle. It could even be the disc shape in the grass... o do have some pictures of it and will try to find them and upload... may have other pics but not as good as some that on here. I think my uncle, the late Davie McLeman, was 'Boots' at Cromarty House. I'm guessing, because of his age, it would have been in the 1930s. 'Boots' would have been the servant responsible for cleaning and polishing shoes and leaving them outside the bedroom door. I'm sure he had other duties.
I do remember Uncle Davie was great at shoe polishing. The trick was to use a little polish and then rub till shiny.
