Locals look on as the fire brigade does its work. The large version of this pic shows a close up of the faces. Can you name any?

I recognise Leonard Shepherd and maybe one of the Roehling boys bottom left. Could that possibly be my granda - Dan Robertson bottom right? Freda or Iris, help! Certainly looks like him. Anyone know the others? Comment left on 08 July 2005 at 21:52 by Dorothy Ewen
I remember this very well ...Catriona Gillies came up to our shop with some stuff she took out of the Post Office ..when the fire started ....This fire and my Mum and Dad's Fire in their shop in High Street will always stay in my memory !! ..I think that's Cathel Mackenzie with the hat in the middle ? ...and I'm sure that is Leonard Shepherd ? on left looking at camera ? ...the other faces hopefully might come to me ? I Interested Babs that you tooks some shots of it ...as I never remember seeing anything about afterwards !! Comment left on 09 July 2005 at 08:57 by John Macdonald

The first building to go on fire was actually the Butcher's shop, belonging to a Mr Jas. More from Rosemarkie. The shop itself was Mr Jimmy Grant the Tailor's place, some years before it was converted into the Butchers. The fire spread rapidly to the Post Office building adjacent, even although there was an 8'-0'' (2.4m) gap between them. The buildings were of an early form of 'dry construction' mainly a basic timber frame, with internal timber cladding on the partitions. Externally diamond metal mesh and harling. The linings were all tinder dry internally, finished in marine varnish!! The local volunteer firemen did a good job saving Mathesons!! Catriona did her public service part, by saving all the PO property, postal orders, pension books etc., etc. Comment left on 11 July 2005 at 20:05 by Clem Watson
Yes, that is definitely `Da`bottom right. That might be Gordon Hogg behind Leonard Shepherd. Comment left on 16 July 2005 at 21:11 by Dorothy Ewen (robertson)
Not a 100% sure but I think the boy in middle with the white collar is Ally Dunnet. Comment left on 21 July 2005 at 22:25 by Sue
Are you all sure it is the post office on fire, I think it is the butchers shop I remember standing beside my granda that's me in the blue jumper. Comment left on 01 November 2006 at 19:12 by Donnie Robertson
Did the fire not start in the butcher's and spread to the post office? Didn't realise that was you in the blue jumper! Comment left on 04 November 2006 at 16:53 by Dorothy Ewen (Robertson)
