After Cromarty's role in pioneering flying boats, Shorts named this one after the town.

The Short CROMARTY (N120) made its first flight on the 11th April 1921, in the hands of Short's test pilot John Lankester Parker. Tested at Felixtowe, in October the aircraft, built of wood, underwent a
period of mooring-out to establish its soakage weight gain. Passed to the RAF's Development Flight in
1922, it came to grief on a shallow reef near St. Mary's Isles of Scilly, subsequently broken up in situ.
