Miranda steps from the water after swiiming across the Firth
Miranda celebrates swimming across from Nigg to Cromarty in under 30 minutes. The well wishers on the shore were applauding loudly as this picture was taken.

I may be mistaken but did Betty Hogg not cross to Nigg in the 50s? Anyone else remember? I know she swam about a lot in the summer.

I believe Betty did swim to Nigg. It's probably mentioned in the book of interviews of local Croms, a few years ago. I have it on my bookshelf - somewhere.....

My Dad Bertie Whiteman was always talking about a lady Betty Toot who alledgedly swam the firth lots?. I dont know what her "real" name was/is Can anyone help?

Yes this is correct. She was accompanied by Andrew Skinner "Rex" and either Albert or Johnnie in the escort boat Enterprise. This was on a Sunday evening after the east wind had dropped. As you say both Betty and also Andrew were very strong swimmers.

I remember sitting on the wall at Shore Street with Elaine when we were kids and Betty telling us about swimming to Nigg. I think my brother Rory did it when he was younger too.

Betty was also awarded a parchment for saving men whose boat got into trouble.
