At the wheel

Date Added: 18 February 2011 Contributor: George E Gilmour Year: 1935 Picture No: 2871

This was taken I believe on board a ship which was off Cromarty to be broken up - The 3 men are left to right at rear - the brother of a Mrs Robertson who lived in Bayview Crescent - Mr Robertson -and my father Peter Gilmour - no date available but clearly quite some time ago. My father died in April 1957 - George E Gilmour

(I've guessed the date at 1935 - Calum)

I am doing my family history - my family dates back to Cromarty - I have several Peter Gilmours through the generations. I am decended from John Henry Hebner and Elizabeth Gilmour. John Henry was a merchant seaman born in Holland. The family lived at 8 Braehead acording to the 1881 Scotland census. Was wondering if Peter Gilmour in this photo was a relative. My Great Grandfather John McKay Hebner was born in Cromarty 16th July 1872. I have an old photo that on the back reads "Gilmours cottage" it looks very like 6 Barkly Street which is another of the address they lived at. Does anyone have any information? 1. re Cathy's comment I have sent an email to her about this as my family once lived in Barkley Lane Cromarty a long time ago.
2. The photo was taken on the "Osterhav" see " The Cromarty I knew" by Eric Malcolm page 19 - George E Gilmour.

Are you able to tell me if you are related to George Gilmore, born Inverness about 1870-Feb 1867, Cromarty; wife Elizabeth Junor about 1870-Nov 1860 Cromarty. Comment left on 07 April 2015 at 02:27 by Angela Barclay
not at all I think but will check and post again as soon as I can Comment left on 09 April 2015 at 20:34 by George E Gilmour
From the research I have done the Gilmours I am related to came from Cromarty and originally further north. It is possible that later generations may have moved down to Inverness but I don't know. In answer to your question Angela I don't think we are related. Comment left on 11 April 2015 at 21:17 by Cathy Monnington

Thanks for that Linda - we were neighbours and lived at 31 Bayview Crescent - who is your father then? Comment left on 10 June 2015 at 21:18 by George E Gilmour
My father was from Ella's first marriage to George Taylor (Fortrose)who died in 1918. His younger brother was Peter, a coastguard, who married Jean McLeod, she lives in Wick. My mother was Louisa (Loula) Taylor from Burnside. Comment left on 08 July 2015 at 13:43 by Linda Low
