"Murda, Jimmy Potchack, Popenny, Lairdie and Boaks"

Garve says "I think this pic is taken on Shore St and that the house with the crowstepped gable is Russel House. If so, then the gable in the background must be the Shore Inn which was knocked down around the 1950s."

Popenny was my great grandfather, Donald Watson, who lived in Big Vennel. He'd broken his leg, hence the crutch. He was called Popenny because he was always speaking about the Pope (probably miscalling him!) Comment left on 07 April 2005 at 17:26 by Freda Bassindale
Yes, it is taken on Shore Street, the cottage behind is now called Shore Inn Cottage. The front door was altered to a window in the mid 1960's when my father bought it. I am surprised that the roof was thatched as late as 1907. Comment left on 11 September 2006 at 23:51 by Ross Couper

As my grand mother was one of his daughters she said he got that name because he had a photo of the pope in the house. Comment left on 20 August 2008 at 22:00 by Moira Macbeath, Dingwall
