My grandfather was born illegitimately to Mary Ann Matheson at 35 Bank St Cromarty in 1914. She had a brother Roderick, and there is a definate resemblance between my Grandfather and your photos (esp the one with the 3 boys - picture #852 - he looks like the middle one). Grandad was left money in Mary Ann's will but apart from that we know nothing - is a connection possible? Comment left on 14 April 2005 at 01:48 by Sharon Elisara
I spoke to Douglas (on the right of the photo) this morning - he says his father came to Cromarty in 1911 from Tain and they never lived in 35 Bank St, so he doesn't think you're related. However, he does faintly remember another Matheson family in the house. I'll see if I can find more info. Comment left on 14 April 2005 at 12:46 by Garve Scott-Lodge
Thanks for that. On my grandfathers birth certificate Mary Ann's occupation is lodging house keeper = so maybe 35 was her lodging house. Her father Peter was a policeman. And my Grandfathers father was (we think) a seaman by the name of Walden. He was English from London. Obviously being adopted makes things so much harder - we have only just secured a copy of his birth certificate so any help you can offer will be most gratefully received (esp as I live in Australia) Comment left on 14 April 2005 at 12:57 by Sharon Elisara
I've added a view of the house on picture #1158. Comment left on 14 April 2005 at 13:53 by Garve Scott-Lodge
Could your Grandfathers mothers name be a married name? Could her maiden name be Duff at all? My Grandad lived at 35 Bank Street in the early 30's. His name is Roderick. My Grandad's father was also Roderick who was married to Isabella May Duff. It seems uncanny that so many Rodericks lived at the same address in such a short time.
