From Cromarty you don't always realise how much the firth widens to the west of us, but this pic shows it clearly.

Wow! I have sailed in and out of Invergordon on the Sailship Statsraad Lehmkuhl a number of times but yes, distances are deceptive. I remember seeing the Nato fleet here in the 50's so it is not surprising that they got so many big ships in.
