Beatrice Wind Turbine No 1 and the A and B Platforms

Date Added: 20 November 2010 Contributor: Calum Davidson Year: 2010 Picture No: 2822

Most folk in Cromarty will remember the two demonstrator 5MW Wind Turbines being build at Nigg in 2006 and 2007, for an experimental wind farm in the Moray Firth. Here is the first one snapped when I was on a Helicopter trip out to them a couple of weeks ago (in terrible weather and light!). The two main Beatrice oil platforms are in the background, still producing oil which is piped ashore at Nigg after nearly 30 years. A further 200 wind turbines are planned for installation at this site by 2015.

Um. A typo there I think, Calum. That should read 5MW. A 5KW turbine is about the size someone might have in their back garden. Comment left on 20 November 2010 at 14:57 by Colin
Thanks Colin - typo now sorted. A 5KW wind turbine would just about run a three bar electric fire, wheras the two Beatrice Turbines are currently the largest off-shore turbines in the world! Comment left on 21 November 2010 at 10:22 by Calum Davidson
That's the Beatrice Alpha in the background, which is made up of two platforms, drilling and production - I've spent a good few hours swinging around on ropes underneath her. The Bravo and Charlie are each a few miles away, Bravo to the north and Charlie to the south. Comment left on 22 November 2010 at 11:10 by Garve Scott-Lodge
