I think this building has been wrongly identified by Hossack & Macleod as a
Manse. Is it not Forsyth House built, by Wm. Forsyth, of 18th Century trading
fame? when Cromarty was in it's heyday? From memory he traded mainly to the Baltic countries.

Hi Clem. Yes it is Forsyth House, but it became the manse in the mid 19th century, I think after William Forsyth's daughter died. I contacted the Church of Scotland when we first moved in but they couldn't give me any precise information. Even though it stopped being the manse (around 1930 I think - Eric Malcolm would know) it was still owned by the church until about 30 years ago. The ruined building in the garden of 1 Braehead was the coach house, wash house, byre, pigsty and hen house. The church sold this bit off about 10 years before the main house. I remember Rev Galloway telling me about the cattle being driven from here down Church Street to graze. He must have got that from a previous minister. The carriage entrance used to be via where the electricity substation on Braehead is now. The front gate, which used to be pedestrian only, has been widened by about one pillar's width since this photo was taken, just enough to allow a car or small van in but the overhanging pillar tops are a problem. One of the stone balls off got knocked off by an over optimistic delivery driver a few years ago and has been squint ever since. Comment left on 14 May 2007 at 09:27 by Estelle Quick
