Digging Trenches on Braehead

With war looming in 1939, the older schoolchildren were employed in digging trenches below the school to use as shelters in case of air raids. Also see picture #1351.

I had my early practice drills in the December of 1940, going 'in lines' down to this actual section of the
Primary 1 part shown here being excavated. Gas masks were checked by Miss Mackenzie('Whitebog') as she was known, prior to leaving for the shelter. I suppose we were not aware at that time the seriousness of the WW2 situation, but on reflection how very well the emergency planning worked. Thank you again Eric for bringing Cromarty's modern history to the fore.
