Daniel Hossack 1871 - 1934

Date Added: 01 January 2003 Contributor: Andrew Bathie Year: 1931 Picture No: 267

My great grandfather and the last of a very long line of fishermen. To those with a passing interest in tracing your family here are some of the pitfalls with particularly the Cromarty fishing families; Daniel was Christened Donald, married as Donald but was buried as Daniel. To his family he was Daniel but most Cromarty folk would have known him by his nickname "Strecht". There are also numerous marriages between cousins as was Daniels to his wife Jane Hossack (nee Hossack).

The shot is taken outside the old school in Shore Street facing the Cross House. Note the old buildings in the background which have now gone.

My Grandfather was James Hossack, also known in Cromarty in his days as Jimmy Dixon. I was looking to contact any relatives I have up here. Comment left on 03 June 2004 at 15:43 by James Moncrieff

Dave, yes this is your grandfather. I have posted a picture of your grandmother (Jane) too [picture #266]. You've no doubt already seen a few of your father on this site but his sisters Catherine (my grandmother) and Esther are also posted. I have a few additional pictures so if you want more drop me a line. Comment left on 01 May 2005 at 17:00 by Andrew Bathie

MY name is Patricia Hossack. I live Virginia USA. My grandfather's name was John Hossack and he married Christine Watson Hossack, also from Cromarty. I am sure I must have some relatives still in Cromarty. Love to hear from them. Comment left on 03 June 2005 at 06:14 by Patricia Hossack Hutchison
Looking at the photograph, the building over Daniel's left shoulder is still occupied, and the others to the rear, over his right shoulder are the Ice house, and the building beyond that used to be occupied by the 'Bannans', subsequently refurbished by Jas. Thompson, & his wife on retiring from Newton, as Grieve, still exists. Comment left on 03 June 2005 at 12:15 by Clem Watson
My great great grandfather was also named Donald Hossack born around 1801 in Inverness - emigrated to Canada in 1835. Married to Margaret Maclea. Was a fisherman as well. Lived in various towns along the coast before emigrating. I have full family history after 1835 nothing before. Does he connect with any of your family? Comment left on 07 July 2005 at 01:32 by Laurie Hossack
Laurie, my clan are all Cromarty based though that's not to say you're not connected. The IGI does list a possible candidate for your Donald b 19th Sept 1800 to Robert & Catherine Macintosh. Chances are if this is the correct one his older children will have these names. Comment left on 08 July 2005 at 16:39 by Andrew Bathie
Hello to all the Hossack's out there, from John Hossack in Australia. Comment left on 22 August 2006 at 02:24 by John and Mary-Anne Hossack
Hi, I'm not sure if I am connected to these Hossacks but I thought it'd be worth a try. I'm in New Zealand and my g, g, g grand-father was John Hossack born in Inverness in 1826. I'm not sure of his parents names but he emigrated to NZ and married my g, g, g grand-mother Jane Warden in 1860. I've not been able to find out which boat he came to NZ in or what hi parents names are. According to my uncle, the family were fisherman and came from cromarty. Is cromarty in Inverness? Rather confused!! Comment left on 04 September 2006 at 05:54 by Karen Hossack
My grand father was Walter Hossack born 1900, think his Mother was Christina Hossack 1877 all from Cromarty, I also have a James Hossack 1830 married to a Christine Ross!!!! Comment left on 20 September 2006 at 19:35 by Karen Hossack
Have discovered that my wife (Joyce Hossack) shares ancestry with the last Karen. The family of the James Hossack mentioned was from Kiltearn. James and Christina had several children, one of whom Elizabeth was the mother of my wife's grandfather (John, whose son Murray is my wife's father). They also had a daughter Christina from whom Karen is descended through Christina's son Walter. Comment left on 09 September 2007 at 17:00 by Hamish Wilson

I have our family bible, and the furthest it goes back is the marriage of James Hossack on 7th January 1868 to Emily Grace Jones. They had a son James Francis Clark, my grandfather, on 13th December 1868. The original James Hossack died in Muizenberg, Capetown, South Africa, no date. Can anybody help me with any information on this branch of the family? Comment left on 20 April 2010 at 19:55 by James David Ian Hossack
My maternal great grandfather was Andrew Hossack (b.3rd March 1839) the youngest of five sons of John & Catherine Hossack (nee Manson), fishers of Cromarty. I wonder whether your great grandfather was the son of one of mine's four brothers (James b.1830, John b.1832, David b.1834 and Robert b.1836)? I live in Hong Kong and plan a pilgrimage to Cromarty with my Chinese wife and new baby next summer. I would love to have a wee bit more information about my ancestors when I do. Any help would be much appreciated.

Lovely website by the way - thanks!

Mick

Hi Lynne, my grandfather said the name Hossack originates from Norway - Allison nee Hossack. Comment left on 18 August 2012 at 04:35 by Allison Grimshaw
Hi Mick (11 Sept 2010) and Malcolm (24 Jan 2012) - Old posts I know but just to say that John and Catherine Hossack are our common ancestors. I am descended from their middle son David (born 1834) through his daughter Jesse who married my g.grandfather Hugh Fraser in June 1894.

To step back one generation from Catherine Manson my aunt believes that she has traced Catherine's parents. Her research has led her to a David Manson and his wife Catherine Sutherland who had a daughter Catherine Manson who was baptized 3 Aug., 1812. In the 1814 Militia Records for Cromarty there is only one Manson recorded - a David Manson whose age is given as 31 and whose occupation is a fisher. Assuming his age is accurate that would place his birth year as 1782/1783.

Dear Donald, Lovely to see your post regarding our distant connection, now stretching back into the late 18th century! Did David stay in Scotland or also, like Andrew, head south? Andrew eventually ended up working as a coalminer in Yorkshire - what a change of environment (but equally as dangerous I suppose). Look forward to hearing any information you have on my great grandfather's brother David's life. All the best, Mick Comment left on 30 October 2013 at 12:56 by Mick Atha
Hi Mick - Sorry for the delay in replying. Here's an extract from my aunt's records who has worked on our family tree. She writes: "the Hossack family moved around a lot. Dad, David, was born in Cromarty. Mom, Helen Clunas, was born in Skye. The children - Mary Jane, aged 12 in 1881, was born in England, Isabella (9) in Redcastle - I wonder if my mother (Eliza Fraser) knows anything about that - Jessie,(7) my grandmother, in Petty,[near Inverness] Thomas, (5) in Petty, Robert, (2) in Auldearn and Agnes, ( 6 months) in Auldearn, Nairn." So it seems David was in England for a while - I wonder if he was with Andrew?- and then returned to Scotland. Other than that I am unaware of what happened in his life. Jessie is my g/grandmother. Best wishes, Donald

Jock was in Canada And dad in the USA in the 20/30's. Dad & uncle George look nothing like the photograph. Comment left on 29 May 2017 at 20:29 by David Hossack
Found this whilst looking for information on a painting I have of Sir John Hare (actor 1844-1931) which is signed F Hossack:
"... a road on the Gainsborough estate which commemorates James Francis Clark Hossack (1868-1937) a local doctor of the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital, who was a member of the Borough Council 1908-1929 representing St Margaret's Ward, mayor in 1929 and became an alderman in 1930."
